What actually makes a domain brandable

"Brandable" gets thrown around to justify any price. We tried to pin down the handful of properties that reliably separate a real brand from a clever-sounding dead end.

Brandable is the most overused word in the domain market. It's used to justify five-figure asks on names that are really just unusual spellings. So we tried to define it concretely.

It survives the phone test

Say the name aloud to someone who's never seen it spelled. If they can write it down correctly on the first try, it passes. If you have to spell it letter by letter, every customer will too — forever.

It has no baggage

A brandable name doesn't accidentally spell something unfortunate, doesn't read differently in another major language, and doesn't collide with an existing trademark. Run all three checks before you fall in love.

  • One or two syllables, easy to say
  • Unambiguous spelling from sound alone
  • No trademark collision in your category
  • Reads cleanly across major languages

A great brandable name is one a stranger can spell after hearing it once. Everything else is a compromise.
